Hello! ready to stop looking old? Need a few tips and tricks (Maybe a few you have never even thought of? Then get ready for a few good ones!

Hi, I’m Jennifer, founder of happygorgeouslife.com!

I’m dedicated to helping women over 40 achieve a happy AND gorgeous life with simple, effective beauty techniques and solutions that make a BIG impact. I know how busy most women, especially women over 40, are! We are juggling our families, careers, personal lives, and home routines, all the while trying to look presentable, put together, and “current” without looking like we are trying too hard! As an older woman myself, I know what it’s like to feel disconnected to the current beauty trends. Social media and the entertainment industry are constantly presenting us images of super young woman with tons of heavy makeup on, as if we can relate. Or, we are shown over complicated, lavish skincare routines. As if most of us have time for that?! The smart over 40 woman knows what will work for her, and what won’t translate into her daily, busy life. When it comes to beauty and wellness, anything overly complicated just doesn’t cut it.

I love making fun videos talking about how we can take small teaks to our routines and techniques to make a big impact to how great we can look and feel!

I you like what you see please, like, comment and subscribe!

Valerie Neal was letting her dachshunds out and contemplating dinner when the police turned up at 6pm one afternoon last April.

She wasn’t concerned — husband Michael Sanders was a former prison officer and the couple were on first name terms with their local force.

But this was no social call. The four men informed the 59-year-old they were arresting her and put her into the back of one of two police vans outside her two-bedroom home in Catterick, North Yorkshire.

The stunned 4ft 10in mother-of-two was driven to Harrogate police station where she was stripped of her possessions, finger-printed and put in a windowless cell overnight.

By the time Valerie was released at 10am the following day, she was banned from her marital home, branded a criminal and facing the terrifying prospect of trial by jury to clear her name.

Her alleged crime? Making her husband’s life a misery.

Valerie was charged with controlling and coercive behaviour towards Michael — an offence that became a crime in December 2015 in an attempt to tackle non-physical abuse in domestic relationships. This abuse includes persistent threats and attempts to humiliate and control.

In what both Valerie and Michael, 59, agree was an increasingly unhappy marriage, she insists the most she is guilty of is hassling her now ex-husband — who had depression — to vacuum, of complaining he spent too much time devoted to his precious sports car and ordering him to cut down on trips to the gym.

Whether that warranted the criminal charges she faced is a matter of opinion. ‘All I ever asked my husband to do was vacuum the house, make me a cup of tea and wipe marks off the patio doors,’ says Valerie.

‘If that’s nagging, I’ll hold my hands up to it. But asking your husband to vacuum is not, in my eyes, a criminal offence.’

There was an agonising 14-month wait for her case to be heard then, at the last minute, she was told the trial would not go ahead. A key witness — a Job Centre employee Michael confided his marital woes to and who passed this information to the police — didn’t turn up and Michael changed his mind about the prosecution.

All charges were dropped in exchange for Valerie accepting a two-year restraining order, which she regrets accepting, saying: ‘I wish I’d never taken it. I wish I’d had my day in court.’

Valerie, who runs her own cleaning company, explains that she was too worn down by the process to protest. ‘If it meant the end of it and I could lead a normal life again I’d take it.’

Coercive and controlling behaviour — which carries a maximum sentence of five years — is a much discussed crime with the overwhelming majority of prosecutions being against men (97 per cent in England and Wales in 2016).

Certainly, such offences are difficult to prosecute. Since the law came into force in December 2015, 7,034 people have been arrested but only 1,157 charged and just 235 convicted.

Yet Valerie — whose Decree Nisi was granted last month — is adamant she should never have come close to contributing to those statistics. ‘I appreciate our marriage was on the rocks but for Mike to treat me the way he did, after all the love and care I put into the relationship, was devastating,’ she says.

Valerie is tanned from a week in Montenegro with her daughters from previous relationships, Lindsay, 39, a bar manager, and secretary Alex, 29, who have supported her throughout.

Valerie recounts Michael (pictured) leaving her to do the chores, refusing to buy groceries and not lavishing her with much attention

She is speaking exclusively to the Mail from the home she now rents in Catterick with her new boyfriend Tony, 33, also a cleaner, who helped her in the aftermath of her arrest. Their two-seater sofa is pristine, their carpet spotless from daily vacuuming — Valerie is clearly house-proud. She’s also forthright and extrovert but adamant that she didn’t dominate Michael, who was working as a CCTV operator for a security company contracted to the military when they met in July 2012. ‘I’m outgoing and can talk to anyone. He was timid,’ she says. ‘But our personalities attracted.’

Both had two children from previous relationships and, having been single since 2005 when a 20-year relationship broke down, she, like Michael, was looking for commitment. ‘He was a gentleman, kind and funny,’ says Valerie, who realised their relationship had a future after a holiday to Cyprus that October. Shortly after, Valerie sold her home in Stockton-on-Tees and moved into Michael’s two-bedroom detached property, using the £30,000 she made from the sale to lavish her new boyfriend with gifts including a £2,000 motorbike and £5,000 sports car.

He’s nobody to me after what he put me through

Having more money than her boyfriend might have shifted the balance of power in her direction, yet she insists she was happy to splash out.

Michael proposed in December 2013 and they married at Richmond Register Office in October 2014.

But Valerie soon realised Michael was increasingly content to leave her to the chores. ‘In the beginning he did the vacuuming but I think he got used to me doing it. His level of tidying was not as high as mine,’ admits Valerie.

‘I’d say, “Mike, the black high-gloss furniture attracts dust. Can you just dust?”’

As months passed, Valerie started to resent coming home to vacuum, having spent all day doing it for other people, not least because the prized black and silver living room carpet showed up every speck of hair from her two dogs.

Valerie says she was left to eat her freshly prepared spaghetti bolognese alone, after Michael began following a liquidised diet, to accompany vigorous training

That Mike, who regularly worked evening shifts, didn’t lavish her with attention on her return also irked. ‘I said it would be nice for me to come home and have a cup of tea made for me,’ says Valerie. ‘He said he didn’t drink tea — why should he? I said because we were married. I was frustrated.’

She was further annoyed by Michael’s refusal to buy her groceries from Tesco, insisting instead on going to Lidl or Aldi.

‘I told him he was getting me butter I’d never heard of and wasn’t getting girly food like biscuits and cream cakes. He said, “get your own food then” so I said, “I will.”’

In March 2017, Michael resigned from his job after being offered a new position managing the gym he attended.

Already a keep-fit enthusiast who lifted weights three times a week, he started to exercise every day, returning home late and embarking on a restricted, and mostly liquidised diet, to accompany his vigorous training.

Suddenly, Valerie was left to eat her freshly prepared spaghetti bolognese alone while Michael pureed chicken breast, strawberries, spinach and milk together.

‘I said it must taste foul. He asked if there was any law that said you had to eat chicken with veg. My criticism annoyed him.’

By her own admission not a regular exerciser, Valerie doesn’t sound particularly understanding of her husband’s hobby.

‘I like my food. I said, “Michael, why are you doing this? Enjoy your life.” It was putting strain on our marriage. If we went out for a meal he’d pick at chicken while I’d be wanting a steak. He’d be out of the house from 6am until 9pm. I felt isolated. When I told him he wasn’t spending time with me, he said he saw me at the weekend. ‘But on Sundays all he did was spend hours cleaning the sports Nissan 350Z soft top I bought him, which was probably his way of relaxation.’

Valerie told Michael (pictured) that she no longer found him attractive, as their sex life dwindled from once a week to a grinding halt

Valerie told Michael (pictured) that she no longer found him attractive, as their sex life dwindled from once a week to a grinding halt

Valerie told Michael (pictured) that she no longer found him attractive, as their sex life dwindled from once a week to a grinding halt

Does she think it might have been Michael’s way of getting away from her? ‘No. If he wanted that he could drive somewhere.’

Part of her appears to have been in denial, not least given an unhappy Michael suggested they divorce in 2017. ‘I said, “come on, Mike, I love you.” I probably didn’t take it on board,’ she admits. Her dissatisfaction in the marriage, meanwhile, was compounded by Michael’s drastic transformation — his two-stone weight loss and ripped physique aided, she later found out, by steroids.

‘His body shape started to change. It was like cuddling an ironing board. I told him I didn’t find him attractive. He said I should get used to it.’

Their sex life dwindled from once a week, to once a month, before grinding to a halt. Not only that, she believes, but his new muscles were pushing down on his lungs, making him snore. ‘I said he was getting so big he was keeping me awake,’ says Valerie, who started sleeping in the spare room.

This miserable state of affairs came to a head in December 2017, when Michael failed to reach sales targets at the gym. ‘He took it to heart and got depressed,’ says Valerie. ‘He stopped shaving and looked unkempt. He asked me what would happen if he lost his job — how would the mortgage get paid. I said that I worked. I was worried about him.’

In January 2018, Michael resigned. ‘He couldn’t eat and wasn’t sleeping. He said he felt unworthy of the world and he felt like taking his life,’ recalls Valerie. Among the questions police asked her were whether she had given Michael a knife to cut his wrists or paracetamol to take an overdose — allegations she denies.

Valerie (pictured with Michael) told her ex-husband that there was no need to call the police, he filed for divorce shortly after her arrest

Valerie (pictured with Michael) told her ex-husband that there was no need to call the police, he filed for divorce shortly after her arrest

Valerie (pictured with Michael) told her ex-husband that there was no need to call the police, he filed for divorce shortly after her arrest

Nonetheless, she can’t be accused of mollycoddling him. ‘I said, “come on, Mike, life can’t be that bad, get yourself up, get your hair washed, have a shave”. I didn’t treat him with kid gloves but I didn’t say it nastily,’ she insists. ‘I still loved him.’

There can be no doubt Michael was unhappy in his marriage — he confided as much to a Job Centre employee that April.

Seemingly without Michael’s knowledge, he told the police what he’d heard. Michael had left the house by the time Valerie woke the next day, and was, she was told, giving statements at the station when she was arrested. ‘I was bewildered. I’ve never controlled anyone in my life. I even asked what controlling behaviour was.’

Her cell had a mattress, a bench and stainless steel toilet. Valerie stayed awake until dawn, ‘absolutely terrified’ in the blue police top she’d been given to cover her shivering, sleeveless arms.

The only time she saw Michael, who filed for divorce shortly after her arrest, was days later when, accompanied by a police escort, she returned to the marital home to pick up clothes. ‘I told him there was no need to call the police,’ says Valerie, who spent the three weeks following her arrest sleeping on Tony’s mother’s sofa before renting her new home.

As months passed her shock turned to devastation. She ‘didn’t dare’ talk to mutual friends who sided with her husband, and felt increasingly anxious about her impending court case. ‘I was scared, devastated and worried it would affect my business.’

Valerie (pictured) claims she never felt ashamed or daunted at the prospect of prison, as she knew that she hadn't done anything wrong

Valerie (pictured) claims she never felt ashamed or daunted at the prospect of prison, as she knew that she hadn't done anything wrong

Valerie (pictured) claims she never felt ashamed or daunted at the prospect of prison, as she knew that she hadn’t done anything wrong

Luckily, she says, most of her clients called the charges ‘baloney’ and she insists she never felt ashamed or daunted at the prospect of prison: ‘I knew I hadn’t done anything wrong. I had nothing to hide.’

The more she learned about the charge, however, the angrier she got. ‘It was making a mockery of a law designed to protect vulnerable people,’ she says.

As for Michael, she says: ‘He’s a nobody to me after what he put me through.’

Michael gave an interview to a newspaper in June but did not respond to requests from the Mail to comment. After the trial collapsed he told the paper Valerie said he was training too much, that she wanted him to clean every day and wouldn’t eat the food he cooked from Aldi or Lidl.

He said he thought it ‘wrong’ they ended up sleeping in separate rooms because a ‘married couple should sleep together’.

He also said he was on steroids, was depressed and still taking anti-depressants.

‘I told her I was suicidal and she told me to get on with it,’ he added, claiming that he ‘couldn’t cope any more with the constant nagging.’

He said: ‘I know people might say the nagging is just married life, but this is not married life to me.

‘I think it was controlling, but I’m not sure if she should have gone to court or not. That was not my decision.’

A couple have transformed an ‘uninhabitable’ Georgian flat that was infested with mould and had roots smashing through pipes under the floorboards into a stunning two-bedroom family home.

TV and radio presenter Shanie Ryan, 35, and ex-professional footballer Tony Sinclair, 34, bought the small basement property in Croydon, London, for £217,000 – and set about tearing out the interior before converting it into a couples’ paradise.

The pair lived at Tony’s mother’s house, and spent every spare moment at the property smashing fittings with a sledge hammer and re-decorating, after learning the skills they needed from YouTube.

They called in teams to solve damp issues, replace the pipes and do the electrics, but renovated everything else themselves to save on the cost of labour, and ended up spending a total of £48,000.

The property has been revalued at an estimated £350,000, netting them a profit of £85,000 for their efforts.

The first time Shanie entered the property, which had no electricity or running water and a serious damp problem, she said she came out ‘smelling of mould’.

‘It was in such bad condition that the council said it wasn’t even wind or watertight’, she told MailOnline.

‘It had nothing done to it for 25 years as the gentleman that lived there before was a hoarder, had a bit of an alcohol problem, and didn’t like to have people round.

‘The flat was literally frozen in time – he had died in the bath unexpectedly and his cup of coffee was still there – it was pretty eerie and creepy.

‘Roots were also growing under the floors and interrupting the pipes.’

The bathroom was also converted (pictured). Everything was torn out so that a new bath and toilet could be added, and the walls could be tiled a chic grey. A new shower and heated drying rack were also installed

The flat had been left ‘frozen in time’ because its previous occupant, who was a hoarder, died unexpectedly. In the bedroom the walls were painted a deep shade of blue and a large bed was added alongside a shelf for many pairs of shoes

Not to be put off by a challenge, however, the pair, who have been together for ten years, decided to buy the flat for its ‘flexible space’.

‘We viewed 60 to 70 properties and this was the first one that we saw with real space wise potential’, said Shanie.

‘Everywhere we had seen before had been really poky and we couldn’t do much with it.’

The sitting room, pictured before the renovations, contained an old sofa, stained armchair and mould-covered walls. After plaster was put in to stop the damp the whole room was stripped before it was re-painted to block the damp, re-tiled and had new furniture installed

‘The house would have been a bit mediocre if we brought in a team’, Shanie said, ‘as a lot of the costs would have been on labour, meaning that we couldn’t buy finishing touches it that we wanted’.

‘I enjoyed mood boards, seeing how all the colours work together and the interior designing.

‘I loved the process of making the look and adding beautiful things like a marble sink, bedding and cushions.’

Tony said that his favourite bit was the demolition, particularly taking a sledgehammer to the decrepit fittings.

‘I also enjoyed working out how to re-configure it’, he said.

The flat has been revalued at an estimated £350,000 and re-mortgaged so that the couple could buy a second challenging property which, Shanie said, looked like ‘the 70s had thrown up all over it’ and had a major asb estos problem.

They also set up company His and Hers Renovations & Interiors together, offering their restoration services to people with houses in need of tender loving care.

Shanie is launching her own podcast Influence Me at the end of this month, which will talk to influencers to find ‘the person behind the media’.

Tony has started working with kids that have emotional problems, and the pair continue to run their business together.

A 29-year-old media advisor who’s on a $108,000 salary has revealed how she’s hoping to get on the property ladder after saving $455,000.

The full-time worker said she shares a joint savings account with her fiancé where they both deposit anywhere between $5,000 to $6,000 a month.

The couple recently moved in with her parents so they could save in the hope of buying a property in Sydney, followed by a home in Europe.

Speaking to Mamamia, the young woman has offered a glimpse into her weekly financial diary – and how she putting away $2,000 in savings a fortnight.

The woman – who gets paid fortnightly – said she gets $6,530 monthly after tax.

As soon as she gets paid, she transfers $2,000 into joint savings account, while her fiancé deposits $3,000.

Her monthly expenses includes $65 on phone bill, $250 on public transport, $48 on gym membership, and $400 on groceries such as food, coffee and her dog’s meals.

She sets aside $500 for splurging, which usually includes clothing, makeup and leisure activities but she has spent it mostly on her dog’s training this month.

She said her ‘regular monthly expenses’ comes to a total of $700 ‘give or take’.

The woman and her fiancé have $455,000 in savings, $2,000 in investments and $20,000 in furniture and art.

The couple have never owned a car and she added she has no debt, loan, credit card, mortgage or HECS.

For work, she usually spends $5.15 on catching a train to work and another $5.15 on her way home, and about $10 on lunch if she doesn’t pack any leftovers.

Every morning she makes an espresso and Greek yoghurt with kiwi fruit and psyllium husk at home – but ocassionally treats herself to a $3.50 coffee to go at a cafe.

During her lunch break on a Monday, she treated herself to two pairs of work shoes for $140. After work, she meets with a colleague at a bar where she spends just $10.

She managed to save on her dinner at an inner-city restaurant with her fiancé by using a $200 gift card.

Over the weekend, she ordered pancakes for $12 at a cafe, after visiting a few open houses at auction, including properties ranging between $1.2 to $1.5 million.

Her weekly expenses came to a total of $988.57.

‘I spent a lot more than I expected to, largely because all my monthly bills were due on one day. I still managed to save double the amount that I spent, but looking at my bank account over the next week I will need to budget hard,’ she said.

‘I can’t spend nearly $1,000 a week, that’s ridiculous. There are a few things I could have avoided, such as having coffee out, and having lunch at work.

‘However I only ate out a handful of times and that included going to dinner and paying with the gift voucher. Once I have a mega mortgage, I will have to rein it all in.’

It can be easy to feel low throughout the winter months, as the weather gets darker and the nights draw in.

But now an expert has revealed how those who suffer a drop in mood at the same time of year each winter could actually be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Dr Arun Thiyagarajan told FEMAIL that those suffering from SAD can struggle to wake up in the morning, face an increased appetite and lose interest in everyday activities like socialising and sex.

The Medical Director for Health Clinics at Bupa UK also revealed his tips for helping manage your mood this winter, including building a routine of catch-ups with friends, and taking time outside – no matter the weather.

Dr Arun Thiyagarajan, Medical Director for Bupa UK, said that it was normal to 'occasionally' feel lower during the winter months - but suggested if the feeling persists every year, you may be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder

Dr Arun Thiyagarajan, Medical Director for Bupa UK, said that it was normal to ‘occasionally’ feel lower during the winter months – but suggested if the feeling persists every year, you may be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder

How can you tell if you’re suffering from SAD?

Dr Thiyagarajan revealed it was normal to ‘occasionally’ feel lower in mood throughout the winter months.

He said: ‘When the nights start drawing in earlier and the temperature drops, you may occasionally find yourself feeling lower in mood than usual.’

But he went on: ‘If you find that you’re feeling low in mood around the same time each winter, it could be a sign Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).’

Dr Thiyagarajan outlined other symptoms including needing more sleep and finding it difficult to wake up, and finding you’ve got an increased appetite could mean you’re suffering from SAD.

He also pointed to craving stodgy and sugar foods, feeling consistently anxious and distracted and losing interest in everyday activities, like socialising and sex, as clear symptoms.

He added: ‘Some people may find that the symptoms cause them to really struggle with their day-to-day life.’

What can you do to beat the autumn blues?

1. Go outside

Dr Thiyagarajan revealed that making the most of the daylight hours was ‘vital’, despite how difficult it might feel.

He said: ‘Although going outside may feel like the last thing you want to do, it can be useful to make the most out of the daylight hours where you can.’

He added that it didn’t matter if the weather seemed grey or drizzly outside, saying: ‘Vitamin D from the sun – even when it’s behind the clouds during daytime – can be beneficial for your body and mood.’

Dr Thiyagarajan also suggested: ‘It can be useful to bring the outside in by keeping curtains and blinds open and sitting close to windows, too.

‘Factor these tips into each day so it becomes routine.’

2. Nourish your body

Dr Thiyagarajan pointed to the importance of nourishing your body, despite what your cravings may be telling you.

He said: ‘Even though you may be craving carbohydrates and treats, it’s still important to make sure that you’re eating little and often, and from all the food groups – not just carbohydrates – so it’s well balanced, as this gives your body all the nutrients it needs to function properly.’

He added: ‘Don’t forget to keep yourself hydrated too, as this will help to keep you energised.’

3. Exercise

Dr Thiyagarajan also suggested exercise was vital in beating the autumn blues.

He said: ‘One great benefit of exercise is the endorphins that are released when you’re active.

‘Endorphins – mood boosting hormones – can help to battle the symptoms of depression.’

4. Reach out to friends and family

The expert also suggested building a routine of catch-ups with friends and family that would be easy to maintain throughout the winter months

Dr Thiyagarajan revealed that opening up to friends and family could also make a huge difference.

He said: ‘If you’re feeling the symptoms of SAD, it can be difficult to find the motivation to get in contact with friends and family to arrange plans.’

He pointed to building a calendar of appointments throughout the year, which would then be easy to maintain throughout the winter months.

He suggested: ‘Make routine catch-ups with them a key part of your week, all year round – you can make them as simple as you like, even if it’s a walk or a chat on the phone.’

Women have been raving about a balm which helped ease the irritation of scars and make their stretch marks less visible.

Mothers, from all over the UK, are raving about the NESSA Scar Saviour, a natural and vegan based balm made of plant actives including turmeric, liquorice and marshmallow, which costs £25.

The balm, which comes in a 30ml pot, also contains hydrating plant oils and butters – jojoba, almond, argan, cocoa and vitamin E – which work together to boost collagen and repair the skin.

Women, who have used the balm, have been sharing their before and after pictures on Instagram, which show their stretch marks almost vanishing and scars from surgery healing faster than they would have – with one even calling the balm a ‘winner’.

‘Now I’ve been using Nessa Scar saviour and nipple sos for 2 weeks and they have both been amazing. My stretch marks have reduced dramatically already, and my scar is very slowly changing too!

‘I am so impressed with what the scar saviour has done in just 2 weeks! I’ll definitely continue to use this and can’t wait to see more results in the months to come’.

While Jennifer also gave it rave reviews after surgery: ‘I have 2 different scars from hip surgery.

‘It’s made a huge difference to the colour and healing of the scar. Plus, a little goes a long way, I use it twice a day and still have lots left!’

Claire Murphy also used in when she burnt her neck: ‘I burnt my neck badly with a curling iron, I started scar savior as soon as the scab fell off and not only was it incredible soothing, it brought down the angry redness immediately and the burn has completely disappeared and I am left with no scar at all, amazing product.

‘I have used other products in the past that have irritated my sensitive skin, this is a winner’.
